Welcome to St Mary Queen of Martyrs RC Primary School

Music 4 You

We made our own school CD at the end of 2007.

If you don't have one yet, we have a few copies left! Please ask in school.

Music is at the core of our school…

Benefits of Singing and Music

Singing is good for you. That’s a fact.

Singing can benefit different children in all sorts of different ways, but here are our top five reasons why singing is such a great activity. Help children find their voice - be it at home, at school, and in the community – and witness the power of singing for yourself.

1. Sing Up for Sociability - Group singing is very powerful in creating a sense of collective enjoyment and shared purpose. Singing with others can help children make friends and develop more positive attitudes towards others in general.  Children who sing with schools choirs and in community groups often have the opportunity to perform in public – sometimes at exciting venues - and this can be a really thrilling experience for the young singers and their proud families!

2. Sing Up for Physical Health - There are many physical advantages to singing such as  increased blood flow, good breathing and posture. Combined with movement (for examples putting actions to the words) or dance, it can be used to combat obesity and increase general physical fitness.

3. Sing Up for Emotional Well-being - Singing is an activity that all children can enjoy together in a non-competitive environment. In fact, with group singing the result of the whole is greater the sum of the parts! Children can often express or vent emotions through song more easily that the spoken word, helping them to grow in confidence and to communicate with others.

4. Sing Up and Enjoy Learning - Studies have shown that singing can accelerate learning and boost the ‘memory muscle’. Learning a piece of information – whatever it is –attached to a tune embeds that information more rapidly, and for longer, than without it. For example, very young children have been shown to increase the amount, quality and understanding of speech developed through singing activities.

5. Sing Up for Musical Development - As well as being an important musical activity in its own right, learning to sing is fantastic preparation for learning another musical instrument and gives an excellent grounding in general music skills (musicianship). It can also foster an appreciation of music of many styles and cultures around the world, many of which include using the voice in all sorts of weird and wonderful ways!

Oh, and don’t forget…

Singing is FREE! It is your own, in-built instrument and you can take it with you wherever you go. A child may leave their PE kit at home, but they won’t forget to bring their voice!

Playing a musical instrument… same benefits

What better way of giving children self confidence and building their self esteem than getting them to learn to play a musical instrument. All our Key Stage 2 children learn to play a musical instrument and 40 of them play TWO musical instruments.
We have a large school orchestra and the children love to perform both in the orchestra and as individuals.
